Fundraising Record Set at 17th Annual Bowling Benefit

Over 250 participants, friends and long-time supporters of Fairfax Adult Softball, Inc. (FAS) united together on Sunday, January 29th for the 17th Annual Benefit Bowling Tournament to raise funds for Northern Virginia Special Olympics and Fairfax County Park Authority field improvements.  The four hour event, which took place at Bowl America in Falls Church, grossed over $20,000 making it the most successful event in its 17 year history. The annual event was also the kick off of Fairfax Adult Softball’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.

“The tournament sold out within three weeks of opening registration and we knew then that it was not only going to be a record breaking event but the start of an amazing anniversary year for us” said FAS Program and Media Manager, Becca Frece.  “These athletes are truly inspiring to watch and the amount of returning participants each year amazes me. They are excited to support the Olympians and it makes me proud to be a part of this amazing event.”

Special Olympics Softball Coordinator, Paul Tierney shares the amazement on the amount of support the community receives year after year. “Our Special Olympics Athletes always have a blast bowling with Fairfax Adult Softball,” Tierney said.  “With the raffles, the auction, food and fun, we can hardly wait until next year! The support of FAS, the players and volunteers over the years has been an integral part of our program! We could not do it without you!”

FAS has been special partners with Special Olympics since 1988 when FAS was first approached by Eunice Kennedy Shriver to assist in establishing a pilot program where Special Olympians play softball alongside our volunteers. Hundreds of Special Olympians have gained not only the enjoyment of competitive sports, but also the camaraderie, training and health benefits that only sports can offer.
